"Aside from the "dull" and "boring" comments, what is it about Masur that people really dislike?"

Basically, it's because he sucks.

I have Masur's CD of Mahler 1 with the NY Phil. It makes a nice coaster.

When you hear BRUNO!!! conduct Mahler 1, you'll hear an entirely different piece. BRUNO!!! loved this piece - it was his favorite of Mahler's symphonies. When you hear this recording, everything will start to make sense.

As for Zander, he's better than Masur, but he's no BRUNO!!! BRUNO's recording of the ninth is a good interpretation, although the sonics on my old Columbia/Odyssey LP leave a bit to be desired (maybe the Sony SBM reissue sounds better - at least it includes an interview and a rehearsal by BRUNO!!!, so I guess I'll have to get it). It seems that Mahler's ninth must be easier on the conductor, since there are several decent recordings of it out there (even Herbie in Berlin was able to do a convincing one).
