And he was. Right now I'm listening to Toscanini conducting 'Ein Heldenleben' and he doesn't even come close to the insight and profoundness of Mengelberg, it's even worse than Haitink's recording of it and this is a 1941 recording. The music doesn't sing, it doesn't swing, it's perfectly nothing although technically quite well played, but that's not what I'm waiting for.Rob
