Dear Bin,

Are you aware Furtie left a performance of Toscanini saying something like 'What a time-beater!' Right now there's a lot of commotion in the UK about the release of some 1951 Brahms performances which he himself didn't want to release, because the orchestra made lots of mistakes and he wasn't prepared enough to his own judgement. What more to say about being a bad conductor? People must have payed a fortune to attend those concerts and he swayed through them earning a lot of money with it, but even now, those people who attended those performances want and love those recordings, because it's mere fame of the name, like his famous quote he directed at Walter Legge after having erected the Philharmonia Orchestra: 'This is a nice orchestra, but it's still a virgin and needs to be raped by an Italian stallion.'

Did the man interprete? It's like Karajan I guess, good in a certain phase of his career, but later on dutifully conducting while his EMI and Decca recordings are great.

Rob
