Is anyone familiar with Vivaldi's opera "Orlando Furioso"? I attempted to look at the LD of the San Francisco version featuring Marilyn Horne last night but could not get past the first act. Some wonderful singing but a very static work with an even more ridiculous story than with most operas, some of which caused amusement with the audience.Maybe I was not in the mood but the trilly singing was ultimately boring so I turned to a more allegorical story line by looking at Barenboim's LD Bayreuther Festival version of "Das Rheingold". I'm not sure I liked the staging but the singing was excellent, particularly Gunter von Kannen as Alberich. Lust, greed, deceit, betrayal, …. all the nicer elements of human nature nicely portrayed. Great stuff but sonically with naughts & crosses digital sound, not a patch on the Solti LP set.
All of which underlines how far we have come in home entertainment, from San Franciso to Bayreuth.
Peace at AA
John
