Ansermet was hard to beat in French and Russian music, and his Beethoven could be excellent as well, notably the 4th, 6th and 7th symphonies. And what about Beecham? The classic 'Boheme' recording is by Beecham, not Toscanini. One writer somewhere suggested he was the most influential conductor of the century and he was certainly the most quotable.
