Help With Mahler's 7th

207.104.65.53

I've been into Mahler for less than a year and am working my way through his works in order. Today I finally got through his 7th (Boulez and Chicago on DG), but it was a chore. This was mainly due to the horrid sound quality which was completely two dimensional, had no deliniation of instruments, and artificial and tinny percussion. Considering this recording is only a few years old, it's one of the worst sounding classical CDs I've ever heard. Because of the horrible sound, I just couldn't get into the music. I felt so detached. I know you will all say it's Boulez, but I can't accurately judge as the sound was so bad I couldn't tell! To the shock of you all, I'm actually quite pleased with the performance and the sound quality of his 6th with Wiener on DG, except that the hammer blows aren't devestating enough.

First, I need a recommendation for the 7th with excellent sound. Second, I must confess that, unlike 1-6, I don't understand the 7th. I know it was written out of order during different time periods, and it sounds that way. It seems so disjointed with no common elements Any insights? Thank you all.
