Bruckner's life does indeed seem unremarkable, outwardly.
and for all it's monumental character, a sensitive reading of his work does not contradict this impression, as the symphonies themselves are inward worlds, aural cathedrals, profound spiritual (that troublesome word again) journeys, long meditations on longing and mortality, the lifelong search for a god (whatever that means) who continues to withhold Himself.
