Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

One man's looney

SPL,

as one who reveres the music of Bruckner, i am nevertheless taken aback at your approach. after initially ripping Kevin McDonald, now you merely use him as an example; the tone is off-putting and the effect is largely the same. if Kevin, who makes no claim to be an expert, reports his impressions, what harm is done? he obviously is interested in the music of Bruckner and is trying to make some sense of it; what's the big deal? you all but cite him as an example of everything that's wrong with the world. i, like others here, stand in awe of your vast wealth of whateveritis, but no one likes to be lectured. your sharing of knowledge is to be applauded, but you don't need to shout anyone down, and get hissy with everyone for being, in your opinion, so comparatively ignorant. yours is not the only view, and many of us who love Bruckner don't give a damn about what Bruckner means in the lineage of 20th century composers. if, in listening to Brucker, someone feels they're peeking into a lunatic's mind, that the music is just plain nuts, so what? that sort of reaction is just one step removed from curiosity which often leads to interest which often leads to...you connect the dots. and i don't think Bruckner would find that reaction as offensive as you do. i don't normally respond to your posts because it's like arguing with an encyclopedia, though i often learn things from them, and do now only because i find your perceived attitude to be typical of the academic in general and, without the saving grace of humor, almost insufferable at times.
i do feel your choice of Tennstedt in Bruckner 4 to be frightening.

regards,

patrick S
