Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

Wow!

I admit to being an inarticulate bore who's entire comment on great music is "Wow!"

SPL, you are another of the mentors who shock and amaze me here at the asylum! As for the vitriolic attacks, please watch the tone...I, for one, would be very upset if you were banned!

But, I think that it is fully understood here at the "Court" that music IS, if it has any merit whatsoever, an inflammatory "tool."
Fickle audiences and critics have walked out of premiers more than once screaming blasphemy, only to return at a later date to proclaim the composer is a genius!
That ambiguity, that lack of original thought by an audience, will always occur. There is too much inability to think on a higher plane, extrapolative thought, for that lack of understanding never to occur.
I have stated here that in education, that idea is termed "higher order thinking skills." It would be wonderful if everyone could instantly understand the new rather than term it "wildly askew."
We know this will never happen, except of course among the few.

To differ in our interpretations, however, is to foment discussion, not thwart it. If we are to be educated by people with your knowledge we must form opinions in order to ask the questions (whether stated in question form or not) to receive answers that in turn allow our intellectual digestive juices to begin flowing (If we are, in fact, able to do so!).

Agreeing with the teacher is no way to receive a good grade, if that teacher is TEACHING, not just spouting words for himself to hear and feel important!

I have stated to many friends, teachers, professors, that I am incapable of remembering raw facts. It is those raw facts that allow us to create the building blocks of understanding...thought is a pyramid!

Of course I remember facts; for the moment that it takes to begin that higher thought process! It is not important that I know the date of Mahler's birth (example only), but I, by originally learning it am aware of what was happening historically to influence his art!

These are the things you and Rob and some others bring to this forum and this is why this forum is visited by the likes of me...an inarticulate soul!
