Re: Composers & Blood Suckers

Being formerly one of those myself (a composer, not [necessarily] a bloodsucker), it was my personal experience that the composers were generally the most normal people in music school (well, we did have one composition student in particular who had a sex-change operation in order to become a lesbian [true story], which I never could quite see the sense of, other than it confirmed that old adage "I'm a lesbian trapped in a man's body"), but even so, this was not entirely atypical of musicians as a whole.

But, as far as those who make an effort to learn about the lives of composers, there are basically two different types. First, there are the classical radio announcers and other pretentious snotbuckets who make an effort to learn some trivial and otherwise useless bit of information about some composer's life so that they can operate under the illusion/delusion that they know more than you and therefore feel compelled to maintain their condescending tone. Most of us have little time for such poltroons and fortunately there are few of them in our midst in this court (at least, I'd like to think that).

Then there are others of us (among whom I believe I and many others around here stand) who appreciate knowing a bit about a composer's life to better understand where he's coming from vis a vis his music. We wouldn't care if Bruckner was obsessive/compulsive, but would care about the seeming paradox between his piousness and insecurity (as opposed to today's Biblethumping Baptist, who would claim that anything they did had God's direct approval - see Jim Bakker). We wouldn't care (directly, anyway) that Tchaikovsky was gay, other than the fact that in his day that predilection was considered such an affront to social mores that it created the progressively tortured soul that gave us the 5th and 6th symphonies. It's only because we love the music so much that we try to gain a better insight and understanding of it by learning about the composer.
