I should've written earlier, I picked up the set over the weekend...it's been out for a couple months but I didn't realize it until I saw it mentioned here. I've compared the sound to the Japanese imports (I have them) and find the new masterings to be an improvement, but I'm still not terribly impressed with the ART discs... Still, for anyone who's not familiar with these recordings, they are essential if you love Sibelius. Sibelius was one of Barbirolli's favorites and he has wonderful conceptions of the pieces as a whole. While I may prefer details here and there handled by someone else, Barbirolli's performances always keep me coming back. BTW, the second symphony on Chesky is a different performance recorded in '62 with the Royal. Most reviewers consider it his best recording of the second. The box set represents B's last recordings of these pieces, all done with his home orchestra (the Halle) and recorded between '66 and '70.
