Gardiner's is my current most-listened to. Modern sound with "authentic" instruments but what I like is the energy and movement of the piece at the brisk pace they use. I believe it may be close to what Bach envisioned. The singing is excellent. This one gets most of the rave reviews these days. There are parts I flat out don't like but I have yet to get a baton in my hand and a recording contract to change them. The opening chorus makes my whole body tingle.

I grew up on Richter's and still like it. It may not be kosher with modern musicology but it's a good one.

Klemperer is a good example of the extremely reverent, awe inspired, get on your knees and bleed version. Very slow tempos with large forces and overwhelming emphasis on "the greatest religious music ever written." Not to my taste but very moving. Lush, romantic Bach. Kind of like listening to Von Karajan playing the Pachelbel Canon.
