This may sound odd, but do you have some advice for me? I now have most of Mahler's symphonies but I just can't get excited about them. There are some georgeous moments and truly uniquely satisfying moments but these seem to be between stretches where my attention drifts. I can listen to whole Wagner operas with much less distraction for example. There seems to be a long line in Wagner that ties it together that I haven't found in Mahler. Is there one, and have I just not found it?I read your postings, go buy the recording, listen intently, enjoy and then shelve it. I feel there is some education I need here. Despite jokes about Zander, his discussion about the 9th really increased my interest and feel for that symphony and it is still my favorite (besides the very simple 1st.)
So do you have recommendations (besides live performances)? Jourdain (Music, the Brain and Ecstacy) says that more complex music is a learned taste. More exposure, more listening, more reading? (and less corresponding time listening to Britney)?
