Actually, I was amazed at the amount "almosts" vs. America discussed. I, personally, have never associated Furtie in any way with America...I considered him a completely German entity. Much to Toscanini's credit, it appears that he (Tosc.) recognized Furtie's greatness, and was willing to put aside stylistic or even (somewhat) political views to get him over here. Wilhelm Furtwangler was offered the CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA?!!! If the "voice" of a conductor like Furtwangler had been injected into the post-war American orchestral scene, there is simply no telling what the modern orchestral terrain would have looked like.
