Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

Opera! Opera! Are these any good?

Also rescued from oblivion at the thrift sore were 3 (count 'em ) boxed opera sets. I haven't had time to go through these but I was wandering if any cognescenti could give me an opinion on the performenace:

Mascagni: Cavalleria Rusticana and Leoncavallo: Paglluci on RCA Victor Red Seal Mono (a real early, 1953, microgroove pressing) with Bjorling, De Los Angles, Merrill, Milanoc\v and Warren. RCA Victor Orchestra (Roberto Cellini) with the Robert Shaw Chorale (Robert Shaw).

(I've wanted a copy of 'Cav', ever since seeing it featured in Godfather III :-) )

Verdi: Requiem with: Caniglia, Stignani, Gigli and Pinza, Royal Opera Chorus and Orchestra of Rome (cond. Serafin). RCA Victor Collectors Issue (mono) LCT 6003 (no date)

Richard Strauss: Salome with: Hildegard Behrens, José Van Dam, Karl-Walter Böhm, Wiestaw Ochman, Helja Angervo. The Vienna Phil. with Von K. Angel SBLX-3848.

This was recorded on Von K's "triumphant return" to Vienna in 1977, after his "stormy exit" 12 years earlier (quotations from booklet).
