Heifetz and the BSO in my room

205.149.174.125

I'm not sure why I went to the thrift store Monday, but I'm glad I did one of the dusty racks, I saw the familiar Living Stereo banner on top of an LP sleeve, I pulled out the Beethoven Violin Concerto in D with Heifetz and the BSO, conducted by Munch (LSC 1992). The record was filthy and well scratched, but for 99 cents I just thought it might be worth a gamble.

After a vigorous scrub and vacuum, it looked a lot cleaner, but there were more than a few visible scratches. I decided to pop it on the TT for a brief listen to see if I should just throw it away. The BSO started up, not bad, a few clicks, but nothing too major. Then Heifetz started playing and I sat mezmerised for the next 20 minutes as my system did its' spooky thing with great stereo recordings and brought Heifetz to life between the speakers.

The tone and fluidity of the playing just blew me away. The ticks and clicks faded into obscurity next to this transcendent performance. The BSO, in their very nice sounding hall, provided a subtle and very well played backdrop for Heifetz' artistry. I flipped the disc and sat hypnotized until the end.

I guess this is one of those rarities: a fantastic performance combined with a great recording. Get it if you can (I bet Rob hates him).
