From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

Famous Dutch Composers, #347

A few months ago I was on an incredibly long flight to somewhere and in desperation listened to the (typically horrible) audio system. In fairness, the system was simply awful (i.e., much better than expected). And after 45 minutes of Mozart, on came a beautiful polyphonic set of chorale music. The more I listened, the more I said to myself - I gotta be gettin' me somma this! Then the music commentator came on and said "And that was Nzzzzkzzzlzzzzzzz Grrrrrbzzzzglkkng...." Aaaaaaaargh....

So. Patient lad that I am when strapped in at 35,000 ft, I waited for the next cycle of the music, patiently waiting through another 45 minutes of Mozart while amusing myself with the air sickness bag and a tube of vaseline. Finally, on it comes again, and I sigh slightly and settle back in my seat. Then the end. And just before the commentator comes on, all systems were commandeered by the pilot, who said, with a Belgian accent, "Alright folks, if you look to the right side of the plane you can see a really big cloud that looks like Mussolini's face. I hope you are enjoying this as much as I am." Then the music programme came on again "And now for a little polka number played by Georgie Soltie and the Chicago Big Band."

"POP" goes the airsickness bag, spewing vaseline all over rows 7 and 8. I put down my special Britney edition of "Tiger Beat" (French edition, a real collectors item). The 4 year old 3 seats over started crying loudly. The odor of ozone and body fluids was in the air...

Eventually, after landing, I undertook to find out just who this " Nzzzzkzzzlzzzzzzz Grrrrrbzzzzglkkng" might be. A vaguely Dutch sounding name, I contacted all of my Dutch friends, who almost uniformly replied "Huh? Famous Dutch composer? You must be kidding. Have a herring and listen to some Wagner."

Eventually, I was able to figure the name was possibly "Nicholas Gompert" and ordered "Missa Tempore Paschali, Magnificat" performed by Henry's Eight on Hyperion. (It took 6 weeks to arrive!)

Anyhow, I finally got it the other day and it is wonderful. Motets and masses. Great recording. Great performance. It was worth the wait. And yes, it was the same thing I heard on the plane.

Just out of curiosity, is it legal for an airline to tear up your frequent flyer card???
