Yes, that's a great recording, but Shelley on Chandos or the historic Rachmaninoff himself display that it shouldn't be played as drivel or highly dramatic in the low register. Rach himself rushes through the score, just lightly touching it, not bashing or making extra resounds - it becomes like a song instead of reaching for the Olympus. Perhaps this is my Dutch thought of understatement, not making things more emotional than they are, but that's how I like it best, because the violins are sentimental enough to my idea...PAAAmpadadam, padadadadam, diedadada-dadada-dadadam, instead of PAAA-DAdamdam, PAAdadadadammmmm, DIEdadaDA-DAdaDA-DAdadAmmmm.
