Re: Best orchestras?

Is this controversy to be based upon recordings, or upon live performances? Not the same thing at all in some or perhaps most cases. Unfortunately, to have heard all of those orchestras listed live at a time when one had enough education and experience to be a judge, one would have to be at least 100 years old. Judging on recordings, the variation in sound over the last 70 or so years for which orchestral recordings are still available, the task is impossible. There is no best orchestra. But it's a fun controversy to engage in. All of the major orchestras of the world, and some minor ones such as the ones in New Zealand and Seattle, have made great recordings from time to time.
