Looking at my score of Mahler's 2nd, there's supposed to be a 5 minute pause after the first movement. I've yet to hear anyone do that in a recording (although I have seen a conductor walk off stage after the first movement - I used to think that was just grandstanding).But I was talking about a DRAMATIC pause, not a chance to give the conductor a break from flapping his wings. Beethoven knew EXACTLY where to place a rest - and even a moment of silence that lasts just a second can be more dramatic than a long pause if used correctly. Of course, Beethoven was the Master of Everything, so you'd expect nothing but the best from him.
