SE,I'll tell you what I know. I love Kempff's performance of these sonatas.......I sorta grew up with them with my father's Lp's. There are certainly more bombastic pianists covering these works (Richter comes to mind), but I have this emotional connection with good ol Wilhelm.
Well, anyway, I was looking for the complete cycle after purchasing a single disc with all the famous fav's on it with DG's new remastering technology ........and I definetly wanted that same treatment for the complete set. I checked out CDNOW and they only had the older remastered set..cat# 29306.......that wouldn't do. Then, almost as an after-thought, I made my way down to YE House of Tower........and low and behold...it was there....."Original-Image-bit-processing"..cat# 453-724-2. It comes in a 8 CD box set with extensive notes.
So unfortunately, I'm unable to compare the sonics between the two sets....or for that matter....my father's LPs. I'm a little confused about the "budget set". The older set that is available at CDNOW is about $55.......compared to the newest remastered set I picked up for $95! I didn't even bother to check if Brendel has a box set available of his latest cycle.......it would probably cost the price of a small car!! So ....I guess "budget" is a relative term.
Regard's, Tom B.
