I got a chance to give it a spin and did notice a lot of tape hiss. I would have thought that the technology in the early '80s (or whenever the cd was made) was sufficient to reduce this noise. It was only really noticeable at certain spots however. The performance, not having anything to compare it with, was fine. If I remember right, the PG mentioned something of a 'live' sound, and I though that it did not have a 'studio' sound. There was enough background noise, shuffling and other assorted sounds to make is sound like a live performance in a hall. I imagine, the newer cd has a lot less hiss, but all in all, I did not spend much on it so it will do.

If I happen to run across the one Rob recommended, I might be tempted to give it a try. I don't know what Mahler intended, but somehow I think a woman's voice on Kinertotenlieder would be more fitting, but a male voice on the others, especially Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen may be the way to go.

Over all I really like these lieder (plural?). The Songs of a Wayfarer, really hit home, as I could relate to the topic. While I listened and read the lyrics, some of John Gorka's songs came to mind that, if put together, sort of mirrored the same sentiments.
