Rob, you've GOT to hear that Brahms.

I think they mislabeled the LP - it's got to be some other orchestra. The Columbia Symphony does not sound at all like the bunch of ragtag misfits that Naxos records. The strings in particular have a silky quality, but the entire orchestra sounds far and away better than on ANY other recording they might have made. I don't know how he got them to do this, but BRUNO ROOLZ!! The same recording is available as a Sony reissue, if you can't find the vinyl.

I like Bruno's Beethoven because that's what I grew up on. You're right, the orchestra is far from Vienna Phil quality, but Bruno knew how to do Beethoven. And Sony has reissued Bruno's stereo Beethoven cycle for less than EMI's mono Furtie set. They're cheap enough to buy both and compare.

But I think my next Bruno Walter CD is going to be Mahler 1 & 2. At least the 2nd has the NY Phil instead of the CBS studio hacks.
