Re: Rachmaninoff's 2nd and 3rd PC's - Soerjadi/LPO/Gomez Martinez

I already addressed this pianist before, being the Netherland's best kept secret of softly and gently keyboarding through the most romantic Chopin with 'A Touch of Romance'.

Last Saturday I went to Paul, my record-dealer again and cleaned up some records featuring Oistrakh and Furtwangler/Menuhin he went to the backroom and made some coffee. After I sat down, took a sip of coffee and drove my teeth into an apple-surprise, usually not containing that much apples, Paul picked a CD from a shelve behind the counter and marched in a straight line to the CDP, ignoring the Oistrakhs which had been cleaned and yearned for a spin on that ClearAudio turntable. "No...." I gasped. 'Heheheheheee,' Paul, nicknamed Mime giggled with a false smile and turned up the volume.

The 2nd concerto started with those deep broad notes and on a Bosendorfer in a 24 bits recording this is quite spectacular. All in all, I ended up taking this CD with me and when there are visitors I quickly hide it like it's a pornmovie, because it's porn to the ears: it has nothing in common with reality, the flute and the oboe are right in time and a little too loud and it's hugely edited. Ralf and me compared it with Richter for the second and Shelley for the 3rd and Wibi Soerjadi loses in all respects, but what a fine recording it is and for those who don't have this Rach Three disease it might very well be the standard recording. Soerjadi also plays the long cadenza in the 'allegro ma non tanto' and uses 17:21 for it.

For those who collect drivel it's also recommended.
