Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

In a word, "Yes"

My experience:

I already owned most of the titles included in "Great Recordings of the Century" in their original CD versions. SO, I had a problem...to re-purchase or not to re-purchase.

Since the new CDs (which use something called ABT, or "Abbey Road Technology" -- probably 20 bit remasterings) are all offered at mid-price (<$10), I decided to buy ONE first and do a side by side comparison. I started with Mahler "Das Lied von der Erde" conducted by Klemperer...solo vocals with orchestra -- a good test for resolution.

Cut to the chase: The new remasterings have SUBSTANTIALLY reduced tape hiss, greater "imaging" in terms of the depth and width of the soundstage, and are less harsh sounding...better overall balance of trebles/bass etc.

I have replaced better than 80% of my EMIs with the "Century" remasters.

BTW, the reason for this is simple: Somewhere around 1997 or so the big record labels finally figured out digital technology and remastering. This is also readily apparent in the DG "Legends" reissues, which I also have comprehensively purchased.

All of that said, and this being a serious, life-long hobby, I will not repurchase these titles should they do further remastering...there is only so much you can get out of 1960's and 1979's analog sources.
