I did'nt know Rob, but I'm not surprised. Furtwangler's philosophy of conducting was almost diametrically opposite to Toscanini's. One stressing melancholic legato the other thrust and movement to capture the music. The point I am making is that Toscanini DID have a philosophy, one that went as deep as Furtie's. Karajan was just a monumental, empty and monumental conductor especially in his later years.Binayak
