I have noticed this recently here in Australia, where a "new" series is announced and then after a few episodes and just as you are getting involved in all the sub plots and gossip, you suddenly realise all the haircuts have changed and you are watching something from 2 years ago.
The long term effect seems to be to make me lose interest altogether.
I know that with the huge increases in channels, budgets have been slashed for programmes and the "golden age" of television is over, but this means of getting more bang for your script just seems self-defeating to me.
Maybe some people can't tell the difference and just watch apparently meaningless longer story lines circling each other... oh, of course, we aren't supposed to remember things for as long as a week are we?
