Reviews and speakers

The 840A has gotten nothing less than stunning reviews in the UK press. The 840C has generally gotten enigmatic (and strange) reviews: it does everything very well, but has no "character". Huh?

I have listened to the combo, but only casually, in a big hifi shop, but I don't know the speakers - probably some kind of Dhalis. There was nothing wrong with the sound. I couldn't find any faults. But it wasn't "engaging" (to me - very subjective) and I think that's true of Cambridge Audio equipment in general when heard through my ears.

Maybe the Spendors would change that. I don't know. That's a great speaker. Maybe it will warm up the Cambridge sound.

Cables. There is no price formula. First of all you have to find out if you are a person who can "relate to" differences in cable sonics. (Many people can not hear (or don't care about) differences between hardly shielded solid copper wire and well-shielded silver litz cables, for example). If not, then you have spared yourself a potentially enormous amount of money. If so, invest cautiously. The top of the line are over $20K. I would start with cables that will bring out some "body" in the music and copper litz construction often does this. Good silver cabling may give you more detail and openness in the trebble, but bad silver cable will sound like Tiny Tim - thin. Price is not a very good guide to distinguish good from bad.

Good luck.
