#1: Hearing Magneplanar speakers about 25 years ago...
but I live in minneapolis, so hardcore music-heads will
sooner or later trip over them here... white bear lake
is 15 minutes away. I didn't have the space and money
to address this need until recently, but it changed
the way I think about recorded music/playback.#2: The first time I heard a CD player. I'm not sure
what model I heard, but I KNOW they were playing
Flim and the BB's 'Big Notes' CD. Pure digital end-to-end
changed my life... and I bought a denon dcd 1500 as soon
as I could afford it.
Yeah, I know, analog is soooooo much better, tubes will
save the world, and I'm a loser for listening to CDs with
a solid state amp, but at the time, hearing music WITHOUT
vinyl surface noise, and a serious dynamic range rocked
my world. I also liked the idea that no matter how many
times I played a CD, I wasn't scraping the sound off the
delivery media with a diamond. Why aren't the vinyl-philes
talking about this issue? Do they buy 10 copies of each
record so they are set for life, or what?#3: When I got a Korg Triton keyboard and some Mackie HR824
reference monitors and realized that everything about my
main playback system sucked (because I put all the money
into instruments and music creation tools) and that I had
better finally do something about dealing with the desires
that #1 and #2 set up while I could still hear well enough
to enjoy it...
