Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

I keep hearing that the difference between 24 bit and 32 bit digital recording is negligible

But with my first full comparison using a Korg DS-DAC-10R with Audiogate4 SW the 32/48 recordings sounds clearly better to me than 24/48, 24/96 and 24/192. I am recording vinyl LPs to digital for the convenience of the digital user interface as putting vinyl on a TT is contrary to my enjoyment of music and am convinced that if done right sound quality will not be an issue. The way it works is a DSD128 is created from the tape outs from my preamp - the Korg samples the analog and sends it to the Audiogate SW via USB running on my PC which captures the samples and build the DFF file. I then export 24/48, 24/96, 24/192, 32/48 and 32/96 WAV files. I can use the AudioGate4 SW to use the Korg as a music player on a line in on my preamp. The .DFF file playback is the best but the 32/48 and 32/96 are excellent and sound very much like vinyl. The 24/48, 24/96 and 24/192 sound decent but just are not as musically captivating as the 32 bit WAV files. Interesting I also prefer the sound of the 32 bit WAV files played back using foobar and my AudioEngine speakers that are rated as 24/96 max. FWIW foobar correctly identifies the WAV files on the UI. When using the Korg and AudioGate4 SW the ADC and DAC are in the Korg.

It's going to take me a couple of days to build up formal digital LPs and get them on the HD that resides in my audio system then I can repeat the listening process again on the actual system I intended to use these on. I don't have a 32 bit DAC so that be interesting to see the results I get there. I'll be building albums for Nick Lowes 2024 Indoor Safari and MoFi's 45 rpm of Heart Dreamboat Annie. Still listening to the original .DFF and exports of album sides. Have to start somewhere.

I actually brought this up for a reason. Is 32 bit better? I'm on an island here and am completely dependent on the tools at my disposal. I will shortly be in the market for a quality DAC. I'm thinking of the RME DAC with it's killer headphone amp.
