Never had the socket problem, but I was darn careful when I put the tubes in 7 years ago and the first pullout to fix the broken resistor lead or lack thereof.I works fine now.
Those Ceramic sockets on a PC Board look like they are able to break off at the base...I put a Finger on the SOCKET prior to removal releases stress on the board and vice-versa on the tube returning to the socket.
No rolling...cover is too much a pain to remove. Never had an ounce of problems with it.
