I don’t have a player recommendation, but have a similar problem as you do. With less than stellar recordings, use an Acoustic Research TDS202 (passive audiophile version) left over from my old system. It does add some bloom or decay and fleshes things out, but also de-emphasizing the attack and deletes some low level details…so the net result is a kinda wash. I don't keep it in the loop all the time because it’s not that clean even in bypass mode. However, it’s redeaming features is it’s ability to help during low volume sessions and to add some life to mono / flat recordings. I’ve seen them on ebay for about less than 50 bucks.
