I noticed that this DVD player has much less popularity (hence more reasonable prices) on s/h prices compared to 588 CDP from the same generation it was often compared to soundwise.I haven't had a chance to hear either machine so I am wondering if 596 would act as a "poor man's 588" or not. How's about its sound - I don't care for DVD or any other formats it supports.
Also, how is it as a transport as a path to upgrade may lead to buying a separate DAC one day.
As Meridian doesn't have a dealer network here where I live, does anyone know what laser/transport mech it uses and is it serviceable independently.
Last but not least - what do you think about a theory of my friend who claims that using 110/220V step up transformer on low power devices such as CDP would also act as a power filtration. I am in Europe and most likely (if I go for 596) the player would be sourced in the US, therefore this sounds interesting to me.
