There is no definitive answer. The original(1980)spec was very low on hours, however I've seen ratings from 25 to 50,000 hours. But never with how the testing was done. I've seen lasers quit within a year, and others last 10 years or more. It depends on too many factors. The statement that a weak laser is far down the list, is incorrect. Probably 90% of the cd players I've repaired have had laser related problems.
Personally, unless the machine was relatively modern (3 years or less) I wouldn't buy used.
