Re: Transport price range in proportion to DAC

It is a difficult question considering the different design philosophies of each DAC. I always liked the non-os DAC design because of its analog like sound. My TRL modified Audio Mirror, which has a direct coupled discreet output (no opamps) sounds best with an active linestage. The sound is very smooth, with excellent tonal balance, but it is slightly darker than the M24. I can run the M24 with my TVC or active linestage with equally good results. While it uses a digital filter it also has passive IV and a true tube analog outout, again no opamps. With the stock tubes I thought the sound was very good, with a little more sparkle on the top end and a little leaner bass than the TRL Audio Mirror. After swapping in some Siemens NOS tubes the sound is a bit smoother, bass is stronger, and in this case I think the upsampling to 20 bits actually is a benefit. It appears to exhibit more detail without any digital hash.

I go back and forth between the two DACs and in the future I am going to use the XLR output from the North Star into the M24 (via an XLR/RCA adapter) as the North Star will output 24/96 in this mode and the M24 will read the signal. It will be interesting to hear the difference in sound quality using the M24 in 24/96 mode.
