Re: Player that equal or outperform the Ayre C-5xe.

By equal or outperform, do you mean on all formats? I had an Ayre C-5xe and ended up selling it. My rationale was that while the machine probably did the best job of playing back SACD discs of any on the market, I could not justify keeping such an expensive machine given my lack of interest in hi-rez formats in general -- I ended up buying only a handful of SACDs, none of which are among my most favored and enjoyed in my collection. As for the argument that this particular machine even if only used for Redbook playback justifies its cost and purchase, I would say that for the price of a good DAC and even just an average transport (probably well under $2K or even less for both), you can approach if not equal the C5-xe on Redbook playback. I think that you are justified in looking at and possibly buying the Ayre only if you really intend to build a significant collection of hi-rez discs, and use the machine in the context of a very high quality audio system. There is probably no universal player at this price point that comes close, but if you are willing spend twice as much, you just may find a universal player that is virtually perfect!
