He was initially considering the Infinitys, currently $100/pr at CC. I haven't heard either, perhaps a head to head is in order. Still, very reasonably priced. I've never heard an Infinity that was less than very good. Most of the receivers I own are vintage, in fact, this Onkyo is my first new electronic purchase in 15 years. Compared to the SX-780 and similar mid-fis I own, the Onkyo surprised me with its clarity and separation. The vintage equipment has a lush coloring that I guess I'm just used to. I listen primarily to classical through headphones, the Onkyo sound was very CD-like in a good way. Perhaps most new equipment is this way?
I'd have loved to talk him into a vintage system, its getting pretty tight down in the basement...
