Hi,The preamp uses an analogue volume control similar if not identical to the one in the 99 pre -- check out the online reviews at the Quad site for exact info. The CDP preamp it is in fact VERY good assuming that there is a reasonable impedance match between the CDP and its associated amplifer fed directly. Try it and see.
