What puts me off having heard a great many Naim products, is the effect they have on the soundstage. My analogy would be to a normal photo and one of the same scene taken with a fish eye lens. This was recently confirmed by playing back to back a cdx and a quad 99cdp mk1. The Naim sounded quite good but created a huge central image with little spatial information to left and right. The quad on the other hand was able to track the effect of the taxing aircraft on dark side of the moon [track 2] seemlessly. The naim on the other hand you could hear the jet start in the right speaker then suddenly jump to the left speaker leaving a hole in the soundstage. This cannot be accurate or right....
At a recent show the top naim system was being used and it was apparent that the designs are now reverting to a more main stream presentation as compared with the cheaper [!] units in there range. It may be just me be I really dislike the Naim wall of sound approach.
