Re: Recommendations for Best current portable CD players!

You might just want to reconsider using a headphone amp IF you can find a CD player that has a line-out jack. I have an older Sony Discman (don't remember model #) that I presently use with a HeadRoom Total Airhead amp (very compact, uses batteries) and Grado SR60s. The sound of the Grados with this amp is MUCH better IMO compared to the regular headphone out jack. Sure, the Grados are efficient enough to be driven directly by almost any portable device... but that doesn't necessarily mean they will sound their best. Unfortunately most current portable CD players (and iPODs)do not have a "line-out", which means that you would have to use the headphone jack itself to feed the amp -- which is NOT worth the trouble (it will sound more or less just like the regular output except maybe louder). I would encourage you to try to track down an older model portable CD player if you can - the current ones try very hard to conserve battery power, and as a result grossly underpower the headphone output, even adversely affecting very efficient phones such as the Grados. Not only will the older ones give you better sound but also, as I mentioned earlier, often have a line-out that you could use a small headphone amp with.

Another option to consider, if you want to spend a little more money, would be a portable DVD player - they will play CDs, CDRs, etc, and in addition to headphone jacks, some also have line-out and even coaxial or optical digital outputs. I'm not sure just how much you want to "get into" headphone listening but if you do become addicted, you can buy a relatively small, portable amp/DAC combination such as HeadRoom's Micro stack, that you can connect with the dig out from a DVD player -- this will blow away (sound-quality wise) any portable device directly feeding your phones.
