We have used both units here and had also the new Apollo. They all offer very good sound quality and the Cambridge Audio is the least expensive of the lot. The Rega units have a much nicer fit and finish as well as feel to them. The Cambridge Audio units have actually improved substantially from their older days in this regard with the release of the Azur series. The overall construction including component quality is better with the Rega units but the Cambridge Audio 640Cv2 does use incredible quality DACs for their price point as has been the Cambridge goal and tradition. So the resolution is really as good as perhaps even the Apollo. They all use different chip sets and when we listen to them side by side, they all have their own strong points so their typically a unit that is favored in one particular system or by one particular individual. The Apollo is the clear winner here as it gets everything the 640 is doing plus has the smoothest sound of any of the units. That may not be an option for you based on your only listing two units, but there it is just for reference. I personally like the Planet for its slightly easier to listen to sound and for it's ease of operation. They have been my favorite players in terms of "fun to use" since the original was introduced. Very easy and just fun to operate. The Cambridge unit really has come a long way now to catch the Planet in terms of resolving ability and the SNR may actually be better. It is also very close in terms of it not being as hashy or spitty sounding as older designs. It has a detailed, yet warm sound in most systems. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your outlook!), I can't say which of those two would be the best for your tastes and in your system. I don't think that you would be unhappy with either unit.
