I have no experience with the Audio Note, but I find the old Sony DVD player, the DVP-S7000 to be a fantastic-sounding transport, superior in many respects to the massive Sony SCD-1; the succeeding model, the DVP-S7700 has been said to be an even better transport. Either should be available for no more than a few hundred dollars, and there are transport mods available for each as well, though I haven't partaken. (They're still very nice DVD players, too, though the 7000 has no Dolby Digital section; don't know about the 7700.)
