Playing CD through digital connection

Hi all
Can anyone advise if it is possible to playback audio CDs on a universal player (Marantz DV-9500) connected to a receiver (Denon AVR-3806) via a coaxial cable?
I had no problem playing with DVD and DVD-A discs, but is unable to get any sound when playing CDs, using a digital (instead of the usual analogue) connection.
