If it has the original electrolytic output coupling caps then they need to have audio going through them for at least 48 hours before they stop sounding terrible. An XM tuner with digital out is great for this. I bought the DAC AH on a whim to use in my home recording studio because I have synths and stuff with digital outs. I tried it in my stereo first and I was initially disgusted by the thing. It sounded terrible, distorted, mono, and phasey. I let it burn with audio running through it for a few days. Those problems went away. I think those electrolytic output caps are a bad choice for audio. I'm looking for a suitable replacement that will fit inside the tiny little space. It is 22uF and 40V. Any suggestions???I didn't want to admit it, but even unmodified the little critter is DAMN GOOD for 135 bucks. I might buy another one because I have a lot of goofy music gear with digital outputs. I think I'll just get the assembled board and the transformer next time to mess around with. Maybe when I have some spare cash and free time (right).
