I'm no doubt it's the CD player that's at fault here.
Guess I'll just have to make do. Nothing against new gear, it's just that to get a CD player to sound as enjoyable as this clocked w/PSU and heavily modded Sony + NOS tube DAC would (total expense at no more than $800) cost upwards of $4k. I guess I'll play the problem discs in my HK CDR30 (also run through the DAC).
