panasonic sa-xr10 question - no sound using digital inputs

maybe i'm missing something but tried using 2 dvd players on both the co-ax and optical inputs but i can't get any sound and the "digital" light won't light.
played with the optical/co-ax settings on the menu.
analog inputs work just fine.
please don't say i have a semi-dud :(
