Without knowing the schematic of the preamp, it is hard to say. You have isolate it is the preamp, we can go further to isolate which stage. Set the gain back to equal on both channel. Connect from the tape out of the preamp to another preamp. Since tape-out does not go through volumne control and line stage, we can further isolate stage further. If that is good, it must be the volume control or the line-stage. You can measure the tracking between the two channels of the volume control to see they give you the same resistance at different setting or not. Some volume control can be up to 20% tolerance level.Paul Lam
