Try to find a used California Audio Labs MCA 2500 -- you can control which channels are active, 500 W in 8 / 750 in when run in 4 channel and 1000/4 run in 2 channel.
I have used it with 3.6 / 1.6 surround system and now 20.1 / 1.6 surround. I compared it to Mac 402 monos on 3.6s and liked it better in 2ch. Also better sounding than Sunfire IMO, lower noise floor, more air, wider soundstage.
You should be able to get one for under 2000. $7500 new in 2000.
They will bring your 3.6s alive.
