35 years ago, while still in high school, we'd go on boat rides on the Bay. Alcatraz, the former Federal penitentiary represented not just incarceration, but the theft of land from native peoples.

And when we heard Public Enemy, we found them to be more political than, say, N.W.A. "Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos" was, on the surface, about breaking out of jail. But it had a really jarring snapshot of how the government recruiting poor people to fight wars was an example of not caring about them, and purposefully keeping them down.

Public Enemy would follow "Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos" up with the even more influential "Fight The Power."
