Can anyone help me determine which is actually the original issue of this album? It came out on Dragon 5002, Mango 9186, Trojan and Island. Which is the original UK pressing? Is one of these the original jamacan issue? Does anyone know what is best sounding? I also have heard that some covers have the most frequently seen cartoon cover, while the actual original has a photo, as well as, "Pressure Drop" is not on the original.
Follow Ups:
It's a fallacy that Jamaican studios were very basic. In the early seventies many jamaican studios were equipped with A.P.I desks, the same as Motown were using on the west coast, and this l.p would have been recorded in one of them. Not sure which, probably Dynamic or Harry J's. The Dragon is the original U.K release, but was probably released in J.A first. If i remember, the cover has a painting of Toots and not the photo shot.
I have the UK issue on DRAGON DRLS 5002, which i think is the 1973 original(could be wrong). Manufactured & Distributed by Island records, it has 8 tracks, no Pressure Drop.
The deadwax has 'Porky' inscribed, as well as a stamped code. No photo on sleeve, just the artwork.

I have the same issue as you......Dragon Records release, no Pressure Drop.
but you look it up aat allmusic.com and you're brought to this release on Mango records with a significantly different track list...omits "Sit Right Down", "I Can't Believe", "Redemption Song", "Daddy", & It Was Written Down" (that's five of eight tracks)and adds; "Time Tough", "In The Dark", "Love Is Gonna Let Me Down", "Got to be There", "Country Road", "Pressure Drop" and "Sailing On" Making for a significantly different album.
I have "Pressure Drop" on The Harder They Come, so I'm not tooo troubled about it not being included, but the other six omissions sure have me curious. I'm assuming that the Mango release is the U.S. release, and the Dragon release is U.K.
Well, the tracks you mentioned "Time Tough", "In The Dark", "Love Is Gonna Let Me Down", "Got to be There", "Country Road" & "Sailing On"
are all on the 'In the Dark' LP, which was the follow up to Kingston(see link).
The Rolling Stone site lists the Mango issue as being from '76, so i guess this is a repackage of material from these two earlier LPs?.Incidentally, In the Dark is a much better LP.

I have seen this LP on Trojan with a different photo sleeve, as above. These were reissues.

it was recorded in a very basic studio and sound is rather primitive, even when the vintage is considered. The best sounding version I've heard is the Island pressing but, even then, it's pretty raw sounding. That does not bother me as I find that the basic low-tech sound goes with the music rather well.
Just enjoy the music. It's some of the best. Toots was like the James Brown of Jamican music where Raw = power!
